Urgent call to action! Poseidon Water is proposing a desalination plant in Huntington Beach. Despite their claims of providing a drought-resistant and eco-friendly solution, Poseidon's proposed plant is nowhere near as economically and environmentally friendly as it seems.
Poseidon's desalination project is hugely expensive, deadly to ocean life, and will worsen the effects of the climate crisis. The project is also destructive to low-income communities and is a violation of our human right to water.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
It is imperative that refuses to sign a 50-year contract with Poseidon water. Over the last 15 years, Poseidon has spent over $1.6 million lobbying for a desalination plant on our golden coast. A group of foreign investors is proposing a $1.4 billion desalination plant in Orange County. Such a project is both unnecessary and dangerous for the environment. According to recent studies, orange County can meet its water needs through 2040 without Poseidon. Low-income families will see increased rates on low-quality water and the amount of energy needed to run the desalination plant will contribute to greenhouse gases that exacerbate wildfires, floods, and devastation caused by the climate crisis.
