November 7th at 10 am Brazilian Time, at Paulista Avenue in São Paulo
This action is being taken to emphasize how meat consumption is related to the loss of biodiversity, nature, and Brazilian biomes. The meat and dairy industry is responsible for 80% of Amazon Rainforest deforestation, as well as other Brazilian biomes, such as Cerrado and Pantanal. Additionally, studies show that the fires have affected approximately 90% of the species in the Amazon Rainforest throughout the past 20 years. It is important to make it known that most of the Brazilian meat is exported to other countries. As a consequence of this exploitative method of production, the Amazon Rainforest is now emitting more CO2 than it is absorbing. For this reason, we need to take action now so that this destructive process can be reverted.
By raising awareness of the great loss of biodiversity, as well as inviting people to reflect on this topic, especially people from the Global North.
To bring visibility to the topic, there will be a performance in a strategic location in Paulista Avenue, in the city of São Paulo. In this action, we will use the figure of the "carpideiras", such as the one used by the Red Rebel Brigade group, to symbolically bury the Brazilian biodiversity. In Latin American culture, the “carpideiras” were women that were hired to cry at funerals.
During this symbolic action, the performers will have moments of silence, to show respect for the animals’ deaths. In addition, another member of the group will be distributing flyers to people that are passing by, to spread more information about the topic.
I am very excited to be a part of this amazing action!
