Los Angeles has a food problem.
More than two million people in Los Angeles County live with food insecurity, and the county’s food deserts are concentrated in low-income and BIPOC communities. In times of pandemic and other crises, food insecurity only becomes more dire.

Here’s an opportunity to make a tangible difference for low resource families trying to eat healthily in Los Angeles.
XRLA is joining forces with WaterLA to help 12 Altadena families plant edible, region-appropriate gardens.
We will deliver and install mini-farm planter boxes and high-quality planting soil. The residents will be responsible for maintaining their gardens and donating labor to their neighbors, who have joined the program too.
There are so many benefits to this project! As well as providing food for families, healthy soil holds more water and so reduces the danger of flooding. And that’s not all! Previous participants have also reported that this project made them more conscious of the way they use water, and the importance of conserving it.
As well as providing food for families, healthy soils sequester carbon and hold water, thereby reducing both atmospheric carbon and the danger of flooding.
WaterLA has already helped 130 LA families to develop gardens with region-appropriate vegetables and fruits. And they continue to work with L.A. homeowners to improve water supply, support native habitat, and build climate-resilience!
