The war against Line 3 rages on—and today, May 7, activists around the country and the world can step up and do their part, no matter where they are.
For months, water protectors have been showing up on the frontlines, protecting threatened tribal lands and ecosystems from this murderous pipeline using their bodies and their hearts. Now, on the #DefundLine3 global day of action, activists will take on the banks that are funding this murderous project, through a series of actions online and at local bank branches and headquarters.
Big Finance is leading the charge into climate catastrophe, and today is a crucial day to hold the sector to account. A report released this spring revealed that the 60 biggest banks in the world have funded fossil-fuel companies to the tune of $3.8 trillion since the Paris Agreement was signed. Not only are they still funding these projects; they’re increasing their funding for them—including the most harmful projects, like Line 3.
It’s time to stop the money pipeline for good. Here’s why:
What’s at stake?
- Indigenous sovereignty: Line 3 would cross tribal and sacred lands, without the consent of local indigenous people.
- Climate stability: the new pipeline would contribute the equivalent of 50 new coal plants’ worth of fossil fuels to the environment.
- Ecosystem health: tar sands spills are worse than even the average oil spill. This dirty oil sinks, making it much harder to clean up—and this pipeline would run through pristine, endangered ecosystems and critical watersheds.
- Public health: tar sands extraction releases cancer-causing chemicals into Alberta communities, and building dirty oil infrastructure through Native territories is a grave public-health injustice.
And here’s how:
