Demand the Department of Justice take back the Chevron-financed private prosecution of Steven Donziger
Call or write the Attorney General, demanding Donziger's immediate release in line with international law!
Human rights lawyer Steven Donziger helped win the historic $9.5 billion judgment against Chevron for deliberate pollution of the Ecuadorian Amazon. After Chevron targeted him in US courts, he was recently sentenced to six months in prison for misdemeanor “contempt of court”. A United Nations Working Group recently found this case to be a violation of international law and has requested that Steven be released immediately.
Representative Rashida Tlaib and Jesús García have spearheaded an urgent letter to the Attorney General Garland demanding his office take immediate action - as the United Nations has instructed - and free Steven Donziger. Thanks to your efforts of contacting your representatives, many have cosigned the letter demanding his release.
We now call on you once again, this time to contact the Attorney General himself and demand he listens to the representatives calling for the Department of Justice to align itself with international law.
Here is a small script you can use when calling the Attorney General's office:
We are calling to demand the Department of Justice take back the Chevron-financed private prosecution of human rights lawyer Steven Donziger in New York. Steven had been in home detention for over two years and now is in prison for six months on a misdemeanor charge. The United Nations Working Group recently found this case to be a violation of international law and has requested that Steven be released immediately. We respectfully request you comply with the law and not allow private corporate-financed criminal prosecutions in our country.
It's unacceptable that Donziger is still under house arrest and Chevron is permitted to continue its war on communities and the environment! It's time the DoJ steps in and defends the values it claims to uphold! The US justice system is supposed to uphold the rights of the people, not be the puppet of the Oil industry!
