XR Takes the Streets Again! Another Two-Week UK Rebellion

“Stop business as usual!”—The demand climate activists have been making for decades. But when Covid brought an end to business as usual, what did the world’s richest governments do? Pour money into getting the fossil-fuel industry back on track. G7 nations spent $189 billion supporting big coal, gas, and oil between January 2020 and March 2021. That’s $40 billion more than they spent on supporting renewable energy.
Which means it’s time to take to the goddamn streets. And thank goddess, XR is here to help. On 23 August, XR UK is launching another two-week action in London, with concurrent events in Leeds and online. This time around, the focus is on listening. Talking. Making sure everyone has a space at the table, and everyone gets heard. That’s right: XR’s occupations will be modelled on Crisis Talks—spaces for everyone to discuss the hard questions: How is the crisis affecting your community? What does it mean to you? And what should we be doing about it?
COP26 and COP15 are approaching this autumn. The world’s leaders need to know that we’re watching them and we are the most important players in this conversation. The time is now.
