24-hour Youth Climate Strike! Los Angeles Sept 24-25
Details, Demands, and Action Items
About the 24 Hour Climate Strike
Save the date and please join us for a global strike day! We will be having a 24-hour strike in DTLA from 10 AM September 24th to 10 AM September 25th. The IPCC report released last month demonstrated that we have even less time than we previously thought, making it even more urgent that our politicians take comprehensive action on the crisis immediately. We will be targeting Big Oil in this action and demanding freedom from fossil fuels. If you’re interested in staying overnight, please fill out the interest form in the link in our bio! Masks will be required. We hope to see you all there!

DEMANDS:
Governor Newsom: STOP approving new oil and gas permits and DROP all existing oil and gas production
- 75% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from extracting and burning fossil fuels, and California’s crude oil is some of the dirtiest on earth. We do not have the time to wait for California to slowly phase out fossil fuels. We demand a more urgent transition from fossil fuels to match the urgency of the climate crisis we’re facing.
Governor Newsom: ROLL out 2,500 feet health and safety setbacks between oil and gas and our neighborhoods
- Over 2 million people in California currently live within a half-mile of an oil or gas well. These are direct risks to the health of the people living near them, 9 out of 10 being people of color.
- In 2020 alone, the Newsom administration approved 3,745 new oil and gas permits. Almost 300 of those were for wells within 2,500 feet of a home, school, or healthcare facility. We demand 2,500-foot buffer zones between communities and fossil fuels.
CalSTRS (California Teachers’ Pension Fund): DIVEST from fossil fuels
- CalSTRS is the second-largest public pension fund in the US and invests more than six billion dollars in fossil fuels. Our education system should be enriching our future, not dooming it. We demand that CalSTRS be invested in our future and divested from fossil fuels immediately
- All interest and investment into coal, oil, and gas companies must be immediately divested and reinvested in companies that are aligned with a 1.5℃ pathway. Furthermore, any company constructing new projects or furthering developments in fossil fuels expansion should be divested.
Congress: PASS the $3.5 trillion Infrastructure Bill
- The $3.5 trillion Infrastructure Bill is the biggest national investment to combat climate change in history. It will jumpstart the decade of the Green New Deal by creating millions of good-paying, union jobs through a Civilian Climate Corps and transitioning the energy grid to 80% renewable energy by 2030 through a Clean Energy Standard.

1800 cities around the world are on the streets today demanding action! As a minimum we need emissions to drop by half by 2030 if we even want to dream of 1.5, yet we're on course for a 16% rise. Our governments are corrupted by the fossil fuel industry, so it's up to us to force the change
